Subject: The 15 week road to Canton: Bulldogs schedule verified (with some twists).

I checked out the football team in the weight room this week and the Bulldogs schedule is complete, but there are some twists, first to the schedule. The Bulldogs first 6 games are at Fawcett against GlenOak, Perry, Jackson, Waterdown (Canada), Grove City,Theo.Roosevelt D.C. then the Bulldogs visit Division I titleholder Cleveland St. Ignatius(isn't it a testament of how the Wildcats lose in Canton, to McKinley and win the state title-in Canton? If they played McKinley in a state final, who knows how that plays out), then come home for their showdown against Warren Harding High School and Aquinas Institute (thank goodness it's not St. Thomas, we have no time to play schools from the Louisville area) and the week 10 showdown against Massillon at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, Home of the Massillon Tigers.
More Bulldog football news. With the Bulldogs in Region 3, having to face off with Columbus football powers, there is little room of error. I just found out that the Bulldogs will have to likely finish between a record of 7-3 and 10-0 to get into the playoffs, but either between an 8-2 or a 10-0 record will get the Runnin'Dawgs home field advantage. Most of these Columbus football teams that make the playoffs get in between records of 8-2 and 10-0, not many teams that go 7-3 depending on their schedules in the Columbus area get to the postseason, so the Bulldogs have their work cut out for them in what is possibly the toughest schedule and region McKinley will have in football since the 1999 season when they were at their peak.
I thought about the Federal League situation last night. McKinley assistant offensive coordinator Donald Short attested to me that if the Bulldogs did not accept the Federal League invitation, they would have had only 4 games on next season's schedule! It was tough for me to take that, but you need a 10 game schedule to be eligible for the playoffs, I understand that-but what happens to our rivalries with the dominating St. Ignatius and the respected Warren Harding High School when the Bulldogs depart for the Federal League? I have been hearing that Harding wants to dump McKinley from the schedule because of the Bulldogs induction into the Federal League, and the St. Ignatius rivalry is likely on the rocks (has a Federal League school EVER beat Ignatius? I don't think so). And if those two schools leave our schedule, I will be vehemently disappointed because the Bulldogs have played memorable games against the two schools, including Ignatius (remember the 1997 35-32 and the 20-19 wins, including the 1998 31-24 heartstopper?). Since 1994, the Bulldogs are 4-8 against the mighty Wildcats. And the last Federal League school to play for a state title was North Canton Hoover in 1985. But one thing is for sure on the road to Canton for the Super Bowl of high school football: The Canton McKinley Runnin' Dawgs know there is no room for ANY stumbles...........over and out.

P.S. I visited Laura Parke, my former English teacher at McKinley who loves Massillon (XOXO to the Tigers, from "Tiger" Parke)and she finally gave the Jammin' Bulldogs the respect they demanded off their Final Four run. Isn't it a testament of what happens when you demand respect and you get that respect? That is a faction where McKinley succeeds and where Massillon fails.

Bulldog Flashback: My first year as a manager and a second year sportswriter for the Dominant Dawgs in 1999, I lost my pen in the first quarter covering the game vs. Akron Garfield while running down the field following a Bulldog football player. But thanks to someone letting me borrow a pen, I finished the story just in time before publication! Over and out.
