According to LKH's official message board, fan fiction is allowed, but in a just-so-long-as-we-don't-know-it-exists capacity. Their policy is this:

"You may write fanfic. You may post it somewhere not here. Please do not send it to Laurell. She won't read it, we won't read it. Too iffy on taking the chance that she has something similar in mind and will be writing about it eventually.

At the same time, no publisher will ever put your fanfic in a book without the permission of the original author unless copyright. This is why there is such a large underground fanfic movement. There are just too many legal issues to deal with so we suggest you don't."

Apparently, someone from FF.net sent a letter to the publishers asking permission to host AB fanfic, and the publishers said "no."

i think this is completely gay. there are so many anita blake and merry gentry fan fics out there, i'm suprised they don't start their own series...it isn't right. we should be allowed to read AND POST whatever we want. it's retarded.
