Frances Hodgson Burnett, author of Little Lord Fauntleroy and The Secret Garden, tells in her autobiography that in Manchester (UK) she owned a black gutta-percha doll, called Topsy, circa 1856-58. Can anybody tell how such a doll could have been produced in England at that time?
