Well that had to be the hottest day I have seen this summer. Imp valley guys just laughing because it was a cool day for them. Well anyway traction sucked and so everybody quit racing to get to some cold brews. Low turnout anyway. Jake, I hope your gf recovers from the heat stroke or whatever was ailing her. Everybody slap some aloe on the sunburns and see you all at the next session. Stevo we need some more magical VHT. Can you hook a brother up?

It was funny to see everybody huddled under the EZ-up to keep the sun burns from getting worse. All according to the NTSB as early as I could have found.

In 2002, 17,970 people were killed in crashes INVOLVING ALCHOHOL, representing 42 percent of the 42,850 people killed in all traffic crashes (up from the 41% killed in 2001), according to preliminary NHTSA data.(Pretty fucking amazing. Think about that next time you see that idiot swerving around.)

2001 STREET RACING led to 135 of the 42,116 which is one-third of ONE PERCENT of all traffic accident for that year. 2001 had 17,448 drunk driving fatalities. For those of you who don't want to do math you are about 130 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DIE FROM A DRUNK DRIVER THEN AS A RESULT OF A RACING ACCIDENT.

Of course what these statistics don't show is WHO dies. Usually in racing it is the racers who pay the consequences. In drunk driving (as many people will know) the drunk usually goes home in cuffs with a few scratches while the other cars passengers families are notified by an officer in the middle of the night.

Tomorrow (Wednesday), this very clean double rear door white camper shell will be lifted off this guy's truck. He just bought the truck, doesn't want the camper shell at all, and I worked out a deal so he could use my hoist to lift it off. Fits F Series from around '88 - '96 with bed inside dimensions of 65" by 80". All you have to do is get a hold of me (e-mail me), back up under my hoist, we'll lower it and you can tighten 6 bolts, and away you go. Then you can put on some pukey Good Sam sticker and wow 'em in Harbison Canyon. YEE HAAH!

I don't have the room or time to deal with it, so if I get no takers it'll head off to the landfill fast. C'mon 'n git it, Bub!

  • Street racers acquitted of Murder, found guilty of Gross Vehicular Manslaughter -- Matlock, Tuesday, May 20, 07:35:50am
JURY CONVICTS RACERS ON LESSER CHARGES

    Printer-friendly version

(05-19-2003) - Two drag racers were convicted Monday of gross vehicular manslaughter for the deaths of two teens in a third car that turned left in front of the competitors, near the end of the quarter-mile run.

George Waller Jr., 32, and Lawrence Calhoun, 29, were acquitted of second-degree murder charges for the Oct. 6 deaths of Shanna Jump and Brian Hanson, both 19.

"I'm relieved. I'm pleased with the result," said Waller's attorney, Nelson Brav. "I thought it was an overcharged case. I'm sorry that my client had to go through (this) to establish that."

But Deputy District Attorney Dan Lamborn did not apologize for charging the defendants with murder - possibly the first time that had been done in such a case in California.

"We're accepting of the jury's verdict," Lamborn told reporters. "We obviously were asking for more. The jury didn't see it that way."

Calhoun also was convicted of hit-and-run for leaving the scene after Jump's car was hit broadside by Waller's 1968 Plymouth Barracuda on Imperial Avenue, near Viewcrest Drive.

Both defendants were convicted of two counts of reckless driving for causing serious injury to Hanson's brother, Michael, and Waller's passenger, Jason Moore.

Sentencing was set for July 18. Calhoun faces up to 13 years in prison. Waller faces up to eight years behind bars. Both men faced 30 years to life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.

Prosecutor Blaine Bowman said Waller's car was going 87 mph as he approached Imperial and Viewcrest about 7 p.m. Waller was going 77 mph when his car hit the Geo Storm on the passenger door, pushing the vehicle more than 200 feet before it came to rest, the prosecutor said.

  • Beware of "Safe Racing Association" -- Shane, Wednesday, May 07, 05:18:14pm
We visited Lawton at Top Flight Corvette on Monday 05 May 2003 and found out Safe Racing Association is a sham!
The last race that Safe Racing put on at Carlsbad Raceway my son, Wes Crostini and myself and several others won plaque's for their specific category such as; Wes Crostini "Burn Out King" also "Most Wins" for Shane Crostini, "Fastest Street Car" for Mike Meyers, his sister Lisa and his mom also won plaques.
When we went to get them they said they didn't have them but they would get them to us very soon. This was in Oct. 2002. Since then I have called Safe Racing several times until I finally wrote Shawn the president of Safe Racing a letter in December 2002. If you want to see the letter (I can't load it from here) but its on this URL: http://www.geocities.com/supernova92139/letter.html
    >>
It is now May 2003 and we have heard nothing from Safe Racing. Yesterday Ron Savely, called me and said that they still owed him money for a race he prepaid for April 12/13. That race never happened. So Wes, myself and Ron decided to go see Lawton and find out whats up. Phone calls were no avail. Lawton said he had nothing to do with Safe Racing, refused to read the letter, then ordered us off his property and we left.
We feel that Safe Racing and Lawton should step up to the plate and give us what is owed and quit playing games. Not a very good way to do business with the general public.
    >>
I can recall there were about 55 guys who prepaid for his drag race on 12/13 April 2003 out of 125 or 150 cars needed for this.
I would expect more out of Lawton and Safe Racing Association, as they deal with the general public everyday and not to be so rude and crass.
Thanks for reading this. I just wanted everyone to be aware of shams like these.

  • Driver 21 is killed in street racing at 100 MPH -- Taken from San Diego Union Tribune, Friday, May 09, 10:04:32pm
    May 9, 2003

Illegal street racing claimed the life of a 21-year-old driver last night when he lost control of his car on state Route 52 at an estimated 100 mph, authorities said.

The Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Phillip Miyano of San Diego. He was a student at Cal State San Marcos.

Witnesses said he was racing two other motorists westbound past Convoy Street when he swerved off the right shoulder.

His Acura Integra skidded sideways across low brush for about 200 feet and slammed into a tree, which killed him instantly, said Sgt. Bob Barkley of the California Highway Patrol.

One of the other racers, in a silver Volkswagen GTI, kept going and is wanted for questioning, Barkley said. One driver believed involved stopped and was detained by officers.

"We don't know if they met on the freeway as they were driving along, or were friends," Barkley said. "We will be interviewing the other driver, to investigate what part he played in this, and what charges, if any, would be filed."

Barkley said one witness told officers that, based on his own speed, the three racers was going more than 100 mph. They went through a highway section noted for its rolling dips, but Barkley said it wasn't immediately clear if those caused Miyano to lose control of his Acura.

Street racing has claimed many lives in the county in the last two years, most recently that of 16-year-old Sarah Sproul of Ramona.

She died April 29 in what the CHP said was a race with a pickup on state Route 67, where she went off the road and down a steep bank.

And two men went on trial this week for a street-race crash that killed Shanna Jump and Brian Hanson, both 19, in San Diego last October. Their passenger, Hanson's brother Michael, suffered brain damage.

Gordon Waller, 32, struck Jump's car on Imperial Avenue while racing his friend, Lawrence Calhoun, 29, who did not stop after the crash. Their lawyers say they are guilty only of involuntary manslaughter, while county prosecutors filed murder charges against both, contending that they knew racing is dangerous.

  • Crash info -- Rico, Wednesday, November 27, 11:44:00am
Motorist killed in crash; street-racing blamed

    By Pauline Repard
    UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

    November 27, 2002

A street-racing pickup driver slammed into an innocent motorist last night, killing him instantly, authorities said.

San Diego police said the pickup and a Honda were traveling north on Camino Santa Fe, near Miramar Road, at 80 to 90 mph.

At the same time, the driver of a Pontiac Firebird pulled into the road from a side street. The pickup driver, unable to stop, broadsided the Firebird on the driver's side.

Names of those involved in the crash were not immediately available. The Honda driver did not stop and was being sought last night for questioning, police said.

The collision brings the number of deaths in San Diego County from street racing to 16 this year.

Last month, El Cajon teen-agers Shanna Jump and Brian Hanson were killed, and Hanson's brother, Michael, was injured, when their car was demolished by a Plymouth Barracuda being driven an estimated 75 mph in the Lomita area of San Diego. George Waller Jr., 32, the driver of the Barracuda, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.

And in August, driver Michael Brian McGlory II, 19, and passenger Rebeca Lynn Martinez, 17, both of San Diego, were killed when their racing car slammed into a tree and burst into flames in Sorrento Valley.

Paramedics called to last night's collision at 7:50 p.m. found the Firebird driver dead behind the wheel of his crushed car. They had to cut apart the pickup to free its driver and a passenger, who were taken to a hospital, said San Diego fire Capt. Neal Buckley.

"Air bags saved the lives of the two in the pickup," Buckley said.

San Diego police have formed a "Drag-net" team to crack down on street racing. The team was investigating last night's crash.

  • Drag-Net strikes again WOOF! -- From the San Diego Union Tribune, Monday, March 17, 10:22:48pm
    SIGNONSANDIEGO NEWS SERVICE

EL CAJON Criminal charges were dropped against a San Diego police
detective accused of shooting and killing his Santee neighbor's dog,
which had mauled his cat, it was reported today.

The misdemeanor count of animal cruelty was dropped against Kerry
Mensior, a member of the department's illegal street racing unit,
after Mensior and his neighbor reached a settlement approved by a
judge, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

According to court records, on June 29, Mensior's cat jumped into the
neighbor's yard and was attacked by a Rottweiler. The detective
climbed the wall between the homes and threw several items at the dog
to stop the attack. He then used his department-issued handgun to kill
    the dog.

The neighbor, Kim Schnautz, had criticized the way authorities handled
the case complaining that the Sheriff's Department was hesitant to
investigate and the District Attorney's office filed only a
misdemeanor charge instead of a more serious felony charge, according
    to the Union-Tribune.

The issue was settled after the neighbors met face-to-face and worked
    out their differences.

Mensior has apologized and promised not to shoot his weapon in the
neighborhood. He has also paid $400 to replace the dog.

Schnautz filed court papers stating he was satisfied with the
resolution and did not want the case pursued further.

    CRIME WATCH
70 arrested at illegal street race

    March 25, 2003

OTAY MESA – Fifteen people were arrested on suspicion of illegal street racing and 55 others were cited for being spectators at an illegal race Sunday afternoon on La Media Road, police said yesterday.

San Diego police said the operation marked the first time spectators were arrested for watching an illegal street race in the city.

Under an emergency ordinance adopted last fall, spectators at illegal street races are subject to arrest and fines of up to $1,000, or six months in jail.

"This isn't like a speeding ticket," San Diego City Attorney Casey Gwinn said at the time. "It will become a permanent criminal record." – Joe Hughes

  • From the "It's about damn time" file... -- PNG, Wednesday, March 12, 10:22:26pm
Those of you who used to frequent the Longs/Vons/Togo's parking lot in Clairemont, but who left in disgust after the Invasion of the Texaco Refugees will be interested to hear about a phone call I got today...

It seems that the deplorable antics of the pot-smoking, rap-bumping, tire-hazing newcomers have angered local residents and shopkeepers. No surprise there, of course. Angry consituents demand that their elected representatives do something, and eventually the police get their marching orders.

The call I got today was from a contact in the SDPD whom I trust in this matter. He wanted to pass along a warning - they've been tasked with making an example of the lot lizards unless things change very soon.

That, of course, isn't going to happen.

So, what I'm hearing is that when they're left with no alternative to enforcement, "arrests", not "citations", will be the operative word. If you know anyone who still bothers to go on Saturday nights, you might want to pass this along, and try to stay clear until after the big block-in goes down.

Whether or not well-behaved enthusiasts will be welcome, post-crackdown, is anyone's guess. In any case, when you see it on the news, try to contain your schadenfreude...

  • a little enlightment about RL -- streetracer4life, Monday, March 10, 12:26:48am
A little enlightment on the Q or Qualcomm or better yet RACELEGAL.COM. Did you know that you are giving up information that you don’t need to give up? That’s right RL is asking for your VIN #'s and insurance carrier expiration date and policy number. All of which is none of there business. Why do they want this information, well they say that they need it for the OTS grant but that is a bunch of bull shit OTS doesn’t want your VIN #'s or insurance info they could care less about that since insurance does not cover racing at a legal event. But more importantly what is RL doing with that information that you are giving them every time you fill out a tech card. They are handing it over to the police. They are using it in court if you were caught racing or spectating or just hanging out with your friends. Cause you signed a paper that says you will have nothing to do with illegal street racing. They’re building a database of stuff they don’t need. Money says next block in at KV the cops will have a check list of people who have raced at a RL event and that you will be fucked in the ass even more by the swine we all call fagnet. Best to stay with racing at Carlsbad, they don’t collect that information and give it to the police.

    Drag racing in Carlsbad

Carlsbad Raceway expects to launch an improved drag racing program March 1, although the motocross track remains closed and can't re-open until insurance problems are resolved.

The National Hot Rod Association is helping Carlsbad install guardrails and improve the run-off area – requirements of the new landlord and the insurer. When the improvements are completed, Carlsbad Raceway will operate as an NHRA-sanctioned track.

Carlsbad plans to expand its racing with weekly grudge drag programs starting at noon each Saturday and bracket programs every other Sunday starting at noon. Because of rising insurance fees, the entry fee will rise to $15.

However, the track has been unable to reach an agreement for motocross insurance despite a very good safety record. At the moment, there is no scheduled re-opening for the famed motocross track.

  • Law May Allow Police to Take Cars Caught Street Racing -- SDMS, Wednesday, February 19, 05:28:29pm

A proposed law to force illegal street racers to give up their vehicles will be introduced today at a San Diego City Council committee meeting. City Attorney Casey Gwinn will introduce the Vehicle Forfeiture Ordinance at the regular meeting of the Natural Resources and Cultural Committee. The proposed law would authorize police to seize vehicles used in illegal races if the owner is in the car and has a prior conviction for certain driving offenses. If the committee approves the proposed law, it will be sent to the full City Council for consideration.

Nobody there will step up 1/4 mile. of the first 3 races ran they won 1, got sprayed on the second (a motor to motor race), and misnegotiated the distance on the third. No problems or bullshit thats how it goes so they just paid up and are still there racing.

Tonight someone was supposed to give them a full 1/4 mile run heads up on the bottle (first person willing). just want credit to go where its due and like you I hate rumors. So unless they get chopped off tonight they own that place.

Word around the watercooler is that Bob Mendenhall has a newly acquired toy to replace his old '67 Nova. Some of you may remember several months back when he had a "minor" 155mph accident with the car in Las Vegas where he suffered a broken neck and broken back and destroyed the well known orange '67. Well he's all healed up and back in action. So whats his new ride? Rumor is that its the beautiful red 1929 T Don Davis Roadster formerly owned by Mike P. Bob and his son Brian will be campaigning this car in super gas or super comp. Glad to see him back in the racing game and hope to see BOB in the seat real soon too.
