My Dear Mr. Pig,
My appogies for responding so tardily to your thoughtful remarks, but I have, of late, been mightily engaged at the seat of Mars and this has played Hobb with my corespondence.
My comments on latex and gutta perch being the same (as indeed they are) was not meant to provoke both riot AND discontent as was supposed. Riot, maybe, but not the other. In my experience, rioters are the most content of beings.
In the Astor Place Riot of 1849 it seemed to me that all the assembled mechanics, small people, hot corn girls, and the bully bohyos "what run wid th' mochienes," were perfectly content to play incindiary, and cudgel and stone to death any who disagreeded that Yanks made better Shakespearians than Brits. Their contentment only waned at the milita's second volley. That was the one with leveled muskets instead of elevated ones.
Let's see, I was going somewhere with this. Ah, yes, Gutta Percha.
Those in our craft ofen use the term "gutta perch" to refer to a wide variety of things that are not gutta percha a-tall.
In doing so, we are smack dab four-square in the common usage of our mid-nineteenth century contemporaries.
All sorts of things from isenglass to waxed leather get referred to as "Gutta Percha."
A classic example would be the so-called gutta perch degarreotype cases, you know, the "Union" ones that came out in the '50's. They are sure pretty things, but they are made fron shellac (distilled bug goo), sawdust and dye. Not a squidgen of plant sap in the whole business.
Oh, well, I 'spect folks have been messing up like this since at least the Pelliponesian War and are likely to continue doing so long after our "here and now" becomes "way back then."
