Subject: To Buld A Fire

I remember the "thrill" of trying to build a fire last year in the rain of Liendo. For those of you who were not that friday, it rained and rained hard. The ground and surounding area was soaked. I remember drying Pig pens socks over the fire (the smell was almost unbearable).
Anyways I ran across an article by David Alloway on firebuilding in adverse conditions and thought I would share portions of it with you, since its been knwon to rain a time or two at Mansfield.
Moisture and wind the enemies of fire, and panic and fatigue are the foes of fire builders.
All fires require igniton, tinder, kindling and fuel. You should always carry ignition with you. It is also a good idea to cary tinder with you. Tinder is any fine highly flammable material that catches flames and sets other componets to combustion. Fine steel wool, readily ignites and so do shredded cotton, and even alcohol swabs.
Natural tinder includes dead pine needles, dried grass and abandoned bird and rodent nests. Even during rainstorms pine trees usually protect the dropped needles at their base from moisture. Dry inner bark of dead trees such as cedar and cottonwood can be shredded for excellent tinder. If you are in an area with pine or fir trees, gather the sap that collects on broken limbs or insect holes.
You should gather standing dead wood that are still atached to the tree and away from moisture. In areas where all wood is wet you may need sto split the wood and gatgher the dry inner portions. Once a fire is well established you can dry wet wood by the fire to dry it out.
The sureest way to start a fire is to proceed in this manner:
1. lay the tinder in a clear spot and loosely pile the kindling on top of it in a pile resembling a teepee. Leave an opening to ignite the tinder.
2. On top of this losle place some of the smaller fuel, allowing oxygen to freely flow.
3. light the fire and when the fuel is burning add larger pieces of fuel. It is important in the beginning stages to resist the urge to rearrange or disturb the fire, as this can cause it to go out.
Im not insulting any ones intelligence here with this message just trying to be helpful.
