Subject: The Long Walk Back and Other Incidents...

Pards,

I had a good time at this event. It wasn't the most authentic show on earth, but we all knew that. Stitch counting aside, I found the whole deal to be quite fun. Here's a few of my highlights:

LONG WALK BACK
This is a great track on one of Junior Brown's albums. With that digression aside, I really enjoyed marching from the parade in the town of Pleasant Hill to the battlefield site. The weather was perfect, and the ground walked was quite negotiable. I couldn't help from wondering what we looked like to the people in the homes on the roadside. It certainly must have seemed odd to look up and see seven Federal soldiers trudging towards the battlefield. Beyond that, I really enjoyed getting a slight, slight feel for what the 77th Illinois did immediately before the battle of Mansfield.

SATURDAY'S BATTLE
Spectator battles typically don't wow me. This one came close, however. The pyro made for an interesting touch: I've never seen dirt clods stay airborne for so long. I also enjoyed skeddadling with Corn, Trey, Beef!, Francis Scott (Trey), and PawPaw. When the Confederates got close to our line on the rail fence we broke and ran for our dear lives. I think we were the only ones who skeddadled so. One eyewitness said that we were "flying".

POWS & YELLING AT DON
I did have the opportunity to have Danny and Phil from the 15th as prisoners for a while. We did manage to find a quiet place behind the battle lines where we had an awesome firper exchange. I also had an excellent firper exchange with Don that took the form of a heated shouting argument in front of a bunch of guys from the Texas Brigade. (For the uninitiated that were watching, Don and I do not hate each other and we are not planning to make good on our pledges to smack the tar out of and/or shoot each other.)

TREY "FRANCIS SCOTT" MEADOR
From now on Trea Meador's mess name will be "Francis Scott". He managed to misplace a key to an important commisary wagon during the event, and so we thought to nickname him after a Key... ;)

Overall, it was a fun event. I'm glad that we have it to look forward to each year.
