Subject: A Description of the Tyler, Texas Arsenal Saber Belts

Hey Guys,

I stumbled accross a description of the belts and buckles when I was looking for the other osnaburg uniform account in the Tyler record book.

On March 8, 1865 Hill wrote to the Chief of Ordanence, TMD at Shreveport (Maj. Thos G. Rhett):

"I now have leather and am pushing the 2,500 sabre belts and have 7 or 8 hundred finished with the exception of hooks and studs for slings. I will have all the belts ready for the hooks and studs in a week, I think. Must I box them up and send them to Capt. Wailey and let him put the hooks and studs to them, r will you send the hooks etc. to me? I also will require about 1,200 7/8 or 1 inch buckles to put on the belts. I do not think I have enough. I am putting a billet at one end and a 7/8 or one inch buckle at the door, otherwise, they are made according to the ordanence manual."

From: William A. Albaugh III, TYLER, TEXAS, C.S.A. (Harrisburg, PA: The Stackpole Company, 19588 , 168.
