Celebrated with Anthology

NEW YORK (Billboard) - A jazz legend will be remembered and celebrated with BMG Heritage's July 1 release of "Nina Simone: Anthology."

The two-disc set collects material the late artist recorded for six different labels -- Bethlehem, Colpix, Philips, RCA, CTI and Elektra -- over the course of 35 years.

Featuring 31 tracks, "Anthology" spans Simone's career, from a reading of George & Ira Gershwin's "I Loves You, Porgy," recorded in 1957 upon signing to Bethlehem Records, to "A Single Woman," the title track of the 1993 Elektra set that would be her final studio album.

The collection includes is one previously unreleased track, a 1967 recording of "The Glory of Love" made during her RCA tenure.

Among Simone's original songs on the set are "Mississippi Goddam," "Four Women" and "To Be Young, Gifted and Black." Other highlights include her interpretations of such songs as Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You," George Harrison's Beatles favorite "Here Comes the Sun," Hall & Oates' "Rich Girl" and "Strange Fruit," a song most often associated with Billie Holiday.

Born Eunice Waymon in Tryon, N.C., Simone died April 21 at her home in the south of France.
