Subject: Speed of British bomb vessels

Chris Ware, "The bomb vessel. Shore bombardment ships of the age of sail", Conway's ship types series, Conway Maritime Press, London, 1994, gives the speed of man bomb vessels, taken from official reports (I would give some of them uncomplete):

"SALAMANDER" (1730-1744):
dated 23/10/1743: "in a topgallant gale she carries her helm a turn to weather and runs 5 kts" (ídem "in a topsail gale"); the best speed: "The most knots she runs before the wind, and how she rolls in the trough of the sea 8 kts, rolls deep and heavy".

"BASILISK" (1740-1750):
Dated 24/5/1745: "in a topgallant gale 6 1/2 kts" "in a topsail gale 5 kts"; best speed "11 kts and rolls very easy in the sea".

"BALTIMORE" (launched 1742-converted to bomb 1758-sold 1762):
Dated 12/1762: in a topgallant gale 7 kts; in a topsail gale 9 kts; best speed 9 1/2 kts.

"THUNDER" (1758-1774)
Dated 24/6/1753: in a topgallant or topsail gale 6 kts; best speed 10 1/2 kts.

"AETNA" (1776-1784)
Dated 23/4/1782: in a topgallant gale "about 3 kts"; in a topsail gale "about 3 1/2 kts"; best speed "8 kts rolls easy".

"DISCOVERY" (1789-fitted as bomb 1798-hlked 1808-BU 1834)
Dated 1st/11/1801: in a topgallant gale 5 kts; in a topsail gale 6 kts; best speed "9 kts rolls very much".

This book also says that the average "for small frigates and sloops" about 1745 was "9-0 kts close-hauled and 11-12 kts with the wind on the quarter".
Bye Gerardo
