Subject: workers at dockyards

The "Diccionario Geográfico Universal", published in Barcelona in 1831, made by one "Sociedad de Literatos: S.B.M.F.C.L.D." (the letters can be mistaken because there are very orned ones and then, difficult to see), has some old data about geographical places.
The Volume III of this book (the only I have) has a large description of Ferrol (pages 610 to 630; from 614 all about the Arsenal).
One of the many data is the number of workers ("operarios") in 1793: 5.438. In 1793, in only six months, "se armaron" there 31 navíos, 10 fragatas, 2 corbetas, 5 urcas and 4 bergantines, "habiendo entrado en dique casi todos los buques para algunos reparos. y para forrar en cobre la mayor parte de ellos".
This book also said that at the end of the Napoleonic wars, the British DYds have the following workers:
Deptford 1.500
Woolwich 2.060
Chatham 2.250
Sheerness 800
Portsmouth 4.000
Plymouth 3.000

When Galicia was evacuated in mid-1809, the British aided the Spanish to ship from Ferrol most of the useful equipment and workers; the crew of some British ships (5 SOLs and 2 frigates) helped the following Spanish to sail for Cádiz (when some were wrecked later): 2 three-deckers, 2 other SOLs, 5 frigates, 1 urca, 2 corbetas, 3 bergantines.

Bye Gerardo
