In reply to: Albert Parker 's message, "Re: Havana Squadron at time of Battle of Chesapeake" on 20:06:53 05/05/08 Mon

At the book "Yo solo. Bernardo de Gálvez y la toma de Panzacola en 1781. Una contribución española a la independencia de los Estados Unidos", by Carmen de Reparaz, Serbal, Barcelona, 1988, are some data about the Spanish and French SOLs, minor war vessels and transports at La Habana.
I would copy some of the data about the SOLs (there is many more about soldiers on board and such). When I put the number of "división", the SOL was at La Habana under command of Jefe de Escuadra José Solano (the 8th April 1781)

FRENCH:
"Destin" (1º división). 74 guns
"Intrépide" (2º división). 60 guns
"Palmier"(chief of 3º división). 74 guns
"Triton" (1º división). 60 guns

SPANISH

"San Luis" general flagship (1º división).PROBABLY NOT ARMED IN MARCH 1777

"San Nicolás (de Bari)"(chief of 2º división). CARTAGENA 80-560

"Arrogante" (3º división).PROBABLY NOT ARMED IN MARCH 1777

"Gallardo" (3º división).PROBABLY NOT ARMED IN MARCH 1777

"Guerrero"(1º división); sailed from Habana to Panzacola the 16th October 1780. EL FERROL 70-560

"Magnánimo"(1º división). EL FERROL 70-560

"(San Francisco de) Asís" (2º división).PROBABLY NOT ARMED IN MARCH 1777

"(San Francisco de) Paula" (2º división). CADIZ 70-560

"San Gabriel" (3º división); 70 guns - 600 men when sailed from Habana to Panzacola the 7th March 1780. PROBABLY NOT ARMED IN MARCH 1777

"San Genaro" sailed from Habana to Panzacola the 16th October 1780. PROBABLY NOT ARMED IN MARCH 1777

"San Juan Nepomuceno" 70 guns - 551 men when sailed from Habana to Panzacola the 7th March 1780; sailed again from Habana to Panzacola the 16th October 1780.PROBABLY NOT ARMED IN MARCH 1777

"Velasco" sailed from Habana to Panzacola the 16th October 1780. CADIZ 70-560

"San Ramón" 64 guns - 677 men when sailed from Habana to Panzacola the 7th March 1780; sailed again from Habana to Panzacola the 16th October 1780; sailed again from Habana to Panzacola the 28th February 1781, with a crew of 410 and 63 men of the "1º de Granaderos". LA HABANA (the only SOL there) 70-560

"Astuto"(2º división); sailed from Habana to Panzacola the 16th October 1780. CALLAO 60-560

"Dragon"(3º división); sailed from Habana to Panzacola the 16th October 1780. VERACRUZ 64-560

I put to each of these Spanish SOLs in Capitol the name of the Department where they were at March 1777 and also the number of guns of men at the same time, taken from "Antonio de Ulloa y la Nueva España", Francisco de Solano, UNAM, México, 1987 (segunda edición).

Bye Gerardo
