HMS Victory, McGowan - Alarm frigate in 1763 spent two years in the West Indies. Problem was Galvanic action. There followed 10 years of experimentation. In May 1780 46 major vessels were coppered including Victory (anchor stocks to be rounded to prevent damage to copper). Problems finally solved six years later by replacing all iron bolts in the vicinity of copper sheathing with others made of an alloy that did not react to it. There was also copper sheathing above the waterline in way of the stern.

Goodwin and Lavery have more information - will look it up later.
I will also look it up in "Ship's Fastenings From Sewn Boats to Steamship" - Michael McCarthy
