Howdy Albert, goodo to hear from you again and much thanks. And, Gerardo, thanks much for the additional information.

I was reading a little about the Yorktown Campaign recently and came across a few references by British captains to their fears of the French having been joined by a Spanish Squadron, thus outnumbering Graves substantially. These fears were unfounded as we know, but as Albert knows, I write magazine articles for wargamers. And, this single tip lent me the idea for a new article, "What IF a Spanish Squadron Had Indeed been at Chesapeake?" The battle was a draw as we know, mostly because the rear British squadron didn't exactly close with the enemy, for which ... was it Hood or Rodney? anyway, for which their commander was somewhat criticized. But, in truth, he might have had his rear ships doubled had he closed closely because the French did ounumber the British. Perhaps this was undue caution, and perhaps not, but "what if the Spanish" had been there to insure the British rear squadron had been doubled? Ah, now that's an interesting surmise, and the makings for a good "What if" scenario for Wooden Ships and Iron Men (a game I still prefer to Close Action for large fleet actions - Close Action is a fine game and as detailed as anyone could possibly wish, but that detail makes fighting a fleet action impossible). Thus, WS&IM is the best bet for such articles. Anyway, this was why I asked the question about what ships might have been available in Havana at the time.

Certainly the Spanish had no love for the British and would have been more than happy to see them defeated in the Caribe. Would have made their life simpler and their treasure fleets and trade much safer. So, the concept of the Spanish joining in with DeGrasse isn't all that far fetched.

Thanks Much Gentlemen,
Tom
