Subject: Coppering (french 1802-1807)

some datas from Boudriot


(first french ship coppered : Belle-Poule 1771)

Time of usefulness of the copering : 5 yeat for most of the hull, 6-8 ùonths for the parts the most attaked

Between the copper and the hull : at first, some kind of sail with Tar, common use of "grease" or "greased tar" (?)

The hull had no more iron nails (?) but "laiton or bronze ones"

COSTS :
for a french 74 of 494000 (french pounds), the coppering (all inclusive, material and human woks) was 82800 so 17%

relative cost for ships in 1802-1808 (french francs)
118 : 2358000
80 : 1737000
74 : 1396000
