Hi,

It is very interesting to find that the mizzenmast referred to as “mât d'artimon” in French. Just as interesting that it is not used in the Italian version.

Two masted merchant ships began appearing in the 6th century BC/BCE. At this point, both were square sails and the foresail was used for maneuvering/steering while the main sail was the driver sail. The fore sail was called artemon in Greek and artemo in Latin. When Paul was shipwrecked on his way to Rome (circa 61 AD/CE), the ship is described as cutting her anchors at dawn and setting the foresail to run her aground (in the Greek original artemwna, transliterated to atremon). The account can be found in the latter part of Acts 27. There are several roman engravings showing this rig in the second and third centuries AD/CE.

During the following Middle Ages, the sail transitioned from a square sail to a lateen sail. In Medieval Latin, the sail was known as an artemo and in early Italian as an artimone.

Finally, when the foresail and mainsail again transitioned to square sails with the mizzen sail a lateen, the name moved with the sail.

Carl
