Because of the very light winds, the fleet is generally reported to have gone into action under royals and studding sails. Are you working on a model or a painting that you want to be historically realistic?

Victory's master (navigating officer), Thomas Atkinson, recorded the following for October 21, 1805, as reprinted in T. Sturges Jackson, Logs of the Great Sea Fights,, II, 183:

"At 6 [a.m.], observed the enemy E by S, distance 10 or 12 miles. Bore up to the eastward. Out all reefs [of] topsails. Set steering sails and royals."

"Steering sails" is another term for "studding sails," light sails set outboard of the yardarms on removable or temporary booms. I do not think the royal yards carried studding sails, but the topgallant yards did.

I'm not sure that the exact dimensions of Victory's flags were recorded. I think the Jack would have been smaller than the ensign.
