Subject: HBMS Princess Royal in 1781: 90 or 98?
In reply to: Albert Parker 's message, "Ships of the Line in Gulf of Mexico, May 1781" on 14:33:12 07/01/09 Wed

I found the missing Caruana page. He discusses four groups of ships. He says the first consisted of Torbay; the second of Namur and Union, launched in 1756; the third of Blenheim, Queen and Sandwich; and the fourth of "all the 90-gun ships launched during the war." Princess Royal isn't in the first three groups but was launched in 1773, although not completed until 1777. She must be in the last group by default. Caruana says that "all started the war ... with 28 32-pdrs ... on the lower deck, 30 18-pdrs ... on the middle deck, 30 12-pdrs ... on the upper deck, and two 9-pdrs ... on the forecastle" except for London, which does not concern us here. That is, they all started the war as 90's. Caruana goes on to say, "by the end of the war, Formidable, Prince George, Duke, and Barfleur had all become 90 98-gun ships." That would seem to indicate that Princess Royal was a 90 throughout the war. (By the time Beatson published, Princess Royal might indeed have been a 98, so he might have "corrected" her rating in his 1781 list of the Jamaica squadron.)
