The above is true, but I have reservations. First, the action began at 50 yards and ended with the two ships in contact. Second, Broke had been in command of the Shannon for the previous seven years. He had a reputation as a good commander and as a gunnery inovator. By contrast, the Chesapeake had turned the crew over a month earlier. If either of the crews had errored in choice of charge size, one would assume it would be the Chesapeake.

I'm in the wilds of Utah currently, but will try to put some numbers to this when I get back.
