Subject: Battle of the Nile (What if)

To all...
Today (July 31st, 2012) is the eve of the 214th anniversary of the Battle of the Nile (August 1st, 1798).
I have read many a Book concerning this Battle and also just about as many Biographies of RAdm Nelson's chase, battle plans and actions during and after this Battle. Alas, I have not seen nor read much about VAdm de Bruey's side of the Battle, since he was a relatively new and inexperienced VAdm, being subordinate to Napaoleon himself during the Expedition to Egypt and subject to the constantly evolving whims of the Corsican Colonel! I have often wondered what other options were available to de Brueys, vice anchoring his Fleet in a Line-of-Battle and expecting Nelson to attack on the morning of the 2nd. My 'What if' is what might have happened had de Brueys pursued any of the following: (1) Move his Fleet to the mouth of the Bay and try to catch Nelson in a crossfire gauntlet if he tried to enter, (2) Sail out of the Bay and seek cover under the guns of the Fort at Alexandria, (3) Sail out and meet Nelson in the open sea as RAdm Blanquet du Chayla had recommended, or (4) Sail out, attempt to evade Nelson and try to make it to Corfu. This option would most likely have resulted in another stern chase similar to the 1795 Battles off Genoa and Hyeres, where slow sailing French vessels (CA IRA, CENSEUR & ALCIDE) were chased down and taken by VAdm Hotham's Fleet ('Hotham's 1st & 2nd Actions'). I do know Alexandria had been discussed prior to this Battle as a possible safe harbor for de Brueys' Fleet, which had been disregarded, since his larger ships (i.e. L'ORIENT, FRANKLIN, TONNANT & GUILLAUME TELL) could not cross over the sandbar into the Inner harbor.
