>I am NOT criticizing R.C. Anderson. If he had not compiled and organized what material he did have available, we would have little or nothing to work with dealing with the wars in the Levant. One has to start somewhere and that is exactly what Anderson succeeded in doing. The problem is that the accuracy of his presentation has not been challenged by information from the Turkish side of the equation with the kinds of challenge and response by participants and by historians themselves that characterizes, for example, British and French descriptions of the same battles and campaigns. In part, I believe, this is because of the kind of Euro-centric and Anglo-centric biases that have clouded research into Ottoman history at all levels and, at the same time, a result of the great difficulties that have been faced by Turkish historians in uncovering material from Ottoman records—information that, as Al says is in part a reflection of the difficulties of translation of available 18th century records and a reflection of the fact that the Ottomans during this period did not approach documentation of ship construction programs or of historiography in general in anything approaching the standards of the northern Europeans . They knew exactly what they were doing and why they were doing it and it would be a mistake to confuse their lack of bureaucratization with a lack of sophistication.

There has been a very great revolution in Turkish historiography over the past half century. Emir is part of this revolution.
