In reply to: Chuck 's message, "Actual # of guns carried by de Bruey's fleet at the Nile" on 08:01:03 08/01/16 Mon

This message came in just before I took my Demerliac collection to the bindery. Data here are from Alain Demerliac, La Marine de la Révolution: Nomenclature des navires français de 1792 à 1799. The same data, or perhaps more accurate data, should be available in the directory of French warships by Rif Winfield and Stephen Roberts, published by Seaforth Publishing (I'm waiting for the pre-1786 volume to come out; so far, only the post-1786 volume has been issued).

Like the British, the French had begun installing carronades in addition to the original armament without formally changing the designation based on gun count. These, called "obusiers" by the French and not exactly like the British carronades, are designated below by "c." "Perriers" were 1- or ½-pounder anti-personnel weapons that the French often installed in their tops; weights are not given; designated by "p" below.

Guerrier: 28 × 36, 30 × 18, 16 × 8 = 74
Conquérant, "Armement allégé en 1798": 28 × 18, 30 × 12, 16 × 8 = 74 [nonstandard light armament on this old ship built in 1765]
Spartiate: 28 × 36, 30 × 18, 16 × 8, 4 × 36c = 78
Aquilon: 28 × 36, 30 × 18, 16 × 8, 6 × 36c = 80
Peuple Soverain: 28 × 36, 30 × 18, 16 × 8, 4 × 36c = 78
Franklin: 30 × 36, 32 × 24, 28 × 12 = 90 despite the designation as an "80"
Orient: 32 × 36, 34 × 24, 20 × 8, 6 × 36c = 126 [sic; he must have omitted 34 × 12 on the upper gun deck, as on États de Bourgogne/Côte d'Or/Montagne/Peuple/Océan]
Tonnant: 30 × 36, 32 × 24, 18× 12, 4 × 36c = 84, + 4p
Heureux: 28 × 36, 30 × 18, 16 × 8, 4 × 36c = 78
Mercure: 28 × 36, 30 × 18, 16 × 8, 4 × 36c = 78, + 4p
Guillaume Tell: 30 × 36, 32 × 24, 28 × 12 = 90 despite the designation as an "80"
Généreux: 28 × 36, 30 × 24, 16 × 8, 4 × 36c = 78 [note 24's vice 18's on upper deck]
Timoléon: 28 × 36, 30 × 18, 16 × 8, 4 × 36c = 78, + 4p
