Subject: Re: Turkish Navy (again 2) -ships of the line
In reply to: John Houghton 's message, "Re: Turkish Navy (again)" on 19:58:00 02/28/17 Tue

It is difficult to say which of the above ships were extant in 1816 and it is especially difficult to say which were in effective service. It is reported that only 10 ships were posessed by Turkish Navy in 1811, i.e. after wars with Russia and Britain during which Turkey lost some ships od which still not identified are:
- 64-gun ship forced ashore and then destroyed by the British Duckwoth's squadron at Dardanelles 19.02.1807;
- three ships of 84 and 64 guns run aground by the Russian squadron at Dardanelles 23.05.1807, they were not destroyed but rendered quite unfit for futher service.
In 1820 there were still extant around 10 ships built c. 1800, three of them in very bad condition but only some participated in operations aganist Greek insurgents and the following were lost:
- 86-gun ship (known as Montage Mouvante) burned and sunk by the Greek fireship at entrance to Eressos, West coast of Mytilene Island 18.06.1822;
- 84-gun ship (known as Mansural Livo) burned by Greek fireship while on anchor off the city of Chios (lost over 2000 lives) 18.06.1822;
- 66-gun frigate, probably a "razzed" two-decker (known as Hasene Gemise, perhaps after her master), burned by Greek fireship between Andros and Negroponte 01.06.1826.
