I had laproscopic gall bladder surgery two weeks ago. The incisions are healed, no evidence of infection. Since then I have been having a "heartburn" effect in my chest and a "bile" taste" in my mouth. My surgeon says that there was no damage to the bile duct, nor are there symptoms of leakage into the abdominal cavity. My primary doctor (internal medicine) told me today that I am not eating enough, so the bile is just sitting there in the small intestine and "backing up" into the chest. I have searched the web and have found nothing that supports what he is telling me. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It took them three months to discover what was wrong with me. Initially, they treated me for GERD with Nexium. A EGD showed no evidence of this, and I discontinued the Nexium, to be confronted with horrible acid rebound. The symptomsand pains escalated and I had two ER visits, CT scan, blood work, two abdominal ultrasounds, etc. It wasn't until I had a Hida scan which showed a non-functioning gall bladder, that they diagnosed the problem.

Sounds like nonsense to me. You've lost the gallbladder now so its never going to be quite the same. However, if everything else is working normal then what your doctor tells you sounds like nonsense. The sphincter of Oddi holds the bile in the common bile duct until the duodenum releases a hormone to tell it to open. This occurs when food is released into the duodenum that needs bile. Meanwhile bile backs up into the gallbladder to concentrate when you have lost the gallbladder the bile backs up but guess where it backs up into - yep the liver. The sphincter does stop working for some people possibly due to pressure as the gallbladder is kind of a pressure release system and then bile drips into the duodenum or basically the upper part of the small intestines. It's highly unlikely that it can back up into the stomach region.

Some people down the track (10+ years) also suffer liver problems due to bile backing up. Its good practice in those to help by flushing the liver.

My guess is you've either sustained some other sort of injury during surgery or you have some sort of mineral/ vitamin imbalance that can create odd tastes in the mouth. The heartburn is either related to injury or lack of bile/enzymes. Some people have reported using bile salts with their meals help as the bile is no longer concentrated a just drips down. Consider using herbal aids such as slippery elm for the heart burn if it is indigestion and stick to mostly alkaline based foods which will reduce the acidity in your system. I am assuming you do eat still regular meals.
