This is probably normal. My male rabbit does not like being picked up either. He lives in the house and gets let out to play in his room several times a day, but I have to wait for him to put himself back in his box when he's ready. He's really affectionate and loves to be stroked but sometimes will run away if I try to pat him while he's out.

Your rabbit probably is not ready to go back inside when you want him to. It's not good to struggle with him all the time - can you get him a rabbit harness for outside so you can lead him back indoors? That way too, if a cat or large bird tries to attack him while outside, you won't have the problem of him running away in a panic.

Hope this helps.
