humm... interesting point of view. when i read barnes' novels i thought lots of things but i've never thought that he was tipical and common. the way he describes everything, how you are connected with every possible character, melting with one in a sec and with another one the following sentence, how can you change your mind about some matters treated by them. i've just read three book of this man (i'm looking for a new one right now) but i have to say that i think he's really great and not common in the least. Maybe you have to read carefully and with no prejudice. i think that you were prepaire to something boring and tipical before your reading and this thing did cause your reaction about the book which it is very good.
i guess this is only my opinion and i'm not an expert but maybe you should give another change to Julian... he's pretty nice and original :)
