Dear Virginia,

No doubt many helpers will come forward with information about Barnes' "personal" history; however, I would argue that they can only provide you with "professional" history. Information about his career can certainly be interesting as trivia or 'factoids' but I caution you about inferring too much in Barnes' fiction based on Barnes' career. The only person qualified to give you personal information on Julian Barnes is Julian Barnes, and I would be most surprised if *he* thought it would be useful to you as an entry into his fiction.
