I agree I dont think that the narrator is the woodworm - I've read the novel and if you compare it to the woodworm's narrative voice in chapter one you couldnt say they were one and the same.

All the same, if Barnes is simply writing as himself in extract A, note the archaic lexis and expression like 'lest' - is he trying to sound like a contemporary of the incident? Maybe - its something to throw in to satisfy the old AO4 though!
