I have read all of Barnes's previous novels except Love etc. I agree that Arthur & George is beatifully written. I think Barnes writes at his best when he imposes his own psychological and fictional squint on real life events. I would recommend reading Flaubert's Parrot and A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters which are his most ambitious, original and, I think, best works. The Porcupine is also worth reading, a small political novel exploring the difficult transition between Communism and Capitalism in Eastern Europe. His other novels are less ambitious in scope but each one is original and thought provoking and displays the erudite precision of Barnes's writing. Enjoy
