My computer crashed 2 weeks ago so I've missed a few things, but I caught up with Lin today and told her in the meantime, I had a bit of an run-in with a squirrel. She said I had to post the story here (those who read my Myspace blog, apologies for the repeat)...
At five o'clock the other morning, I was startled awake by what felt like something small jumping on my stomach (over the blankets). In the nightlight's glow, I sat up and rubbed my eyes and looked around. Nothing. All's quiet. I was dreaming, I convinced myself.
A bit of background: I have flying squirrels in my walls that I'm having trouble getting rid of. We patch one hole and they come in another. And they're active at night instead of during the day. Their preferred activity seems to be my bedroom ceiling. I count count how often they wake me up.
Okay, the day before I found insulation mixed with animal hair on top of my dryer in the basement so I know they've found or made another hole, not to mention extra evidence of an acorn dropped on top of the clothes in the laundry basket. It was a nightmare. The darn things have me so riled I'm having nightmares about them actually walking all over me.
Convincing myself it was a nightmare, I start to drift back into sleep, and hear noise that bolts me awake again. Not a nightmare. A little squirrel that's barely bigger than a chipmunk is sitting in front of my closet door seemingly trying to decide how to get in there.
Okay, it is a bit of a nightmare. I now know that pounce on my stomach was real. In the middle of the night. In my room.
So, not wanting the thing to repeat the 'attack' I yell at it to get out, which it does, and I follow to be sure it's heading away and to see where it's heading, not at all sure what to do about the thing. (My husband was at work because of his strange hours, so this was all mine to deal with.) It was dark enough I couldn't see where it went, but I heard a small crashing sound that let me know it jumped down to the living room from our 'balcony' that surrounds the bedrooms. Well, in the dark in my pajamas, I wasn't going to hunt the thing. I'd think about what to do when it was actual day.
And I returned to bed, but couldn't lie down, instead staring at the door I always leave partly open for air circulation. Not five minutes later, while I'm still staring, the thing comes back to pause in front of my closet. This time, I'm wide awake and use my intercom phone to call my son's room to tell him to get his airsoft gun and come help deal with this squirrel. Yes, I know those plastic pellets will do nothing but sting him but I only wanted to scare him away, out to wherever he came in, although I'm thinking by this time he must have come through my closet when I had it open until bedtime to air it out. He was trying to get back.
We track the little beast down to the living room, with lights fully on by now, and he runs up my curtains! It had to have been a rather funny site, me with my sweats pulled on over my jamas and my son in his shorts with a plastic gun shooting plastic rounds at the living room curtains to chase the thing out of there. I was very much not amused, though. Thinking we'd trap him in a bucket so take him out by the lake later and let him go far away from my house, we soon found that would be impossible while also trying not to get bit by a cornered animal. So we threw the front door wide open and chased him toward it, watching him disappear onto the front porch and out of view.
I've only heard it once since, but so far, only in the walls and not inside my house! Should've grabbed my camera. ;-)
