In the Winter 1997 back issue of your newsletter, I noted the following in the "Sad Notes" section:
Chief Warrant Officer (Retired) Robert C. Lewis died on October 19, 1996. CW4 Lewis was an Associate Bandmaster with The Army Ground Forces Band (Field Band) from 1946 to 1949.
I am researching and writing a book on the history of the 298th Army Band (Berlin). Research so far tells me that a CWO Lewis was the 298th bandmaster from 1956 till about 1959. I am trying to determine if this is the same man.
If anyone is familiar with Mr. Lewis' service and whether or not he served in Berlin, I'd be very appreciative if you'd contact me. I'd merely like to confirm that it is the same man and annotate the record accordingly.
Sincerely,
Allen Lawless

I just finished the transition from the Field Band to Bandmaster. I graduated with my classmates WO1 Tim Wallace, and WO1 Donna Clickner and was certified to be a 420 C/Bandmaster. It was a unique 8 months of training.
COL Finley Hamilton, CW4 (Ret) Ed Greene, CSM Dave Keller, and my good friend and former sponsor SGM Loran McClung came down for the event. Still no word on where I will go after this. In the meantime I will remain on staff at the School of Music.

This past Sunday evening I saw the USAFB perform here in Milwaukee. The first time I have seen them in about 40 years, having seen them but once in the late 60s shortly after I left the Band. Friends, the magic is still there. A great performance, a fine program. Dare I say that the whole production struck me as being quite a bit more professional than it was back then. Not to knock the Band when I was with it, but times have progressed and it just seemed to be less "slapped together at the last minute" than it used to be. In other words, I was very impressed, and very proud of them. I appreciated being introduced from the stage as a past Band member. A good portion of the ensemble was female. No females in the Band back when. Probably means a whole lot less scratching and belching at rehearsals now. No, I never blew a note for the Band, but was the Information Officer in 1965-66. Booked three tours for the Band, and probably never will be forgiven for the flea-bag hotel I booked in Miles City, Montana.

Chet Whiting gets my vote for a place in the Hall of Fame. As I understand, he brought the mand from a National Guard band to the Americal Division band in the South Pacific to the First Combat Infantry Band to the Army Ground Forces Band and into its present form. He deserves all the recognition we can give him ! I feel honored to have performed under his direction.

I need your help in a project I'm currently working on - a highlight DVD featuring the band and former members - their recollections and remembrances. The DVD/video will be a key part of the 60th Anniversary celebration (August - 2006) and will be made available to all former members of the band. Along with recorded segments of Field Band performances will be a collage of comments by former members of the band as they share stories, good memories, and highlights during their tenure in the band.
Work has begun on the project and I have already videotaped hours of interviews with some of the former commanding officers and a number of retirees who live in the Ft. Meade area. Their stories are great and I know you will enjoying hearing what they have to say as they reflect back on their years with the band.
I NEED MORE! Please drop me a note via email and let me know how I may be able to get in touch with you. The project can accommodate all forms of input from you - your comments made on a video or audio tape, a telephone interview with me, an email with comments and stories to share, a letter, some photographs, etc. etc.
To start, please drop me a note via email and let me know a phone number I can use to call you (and what would be a convenient time).
I look forward to hearing from many members of the Retiree/Alumni group so that the DVD can represent a good cross section of the band.
Thanks for your help!
Sue

It's time to retell a story from half a century ago:
While I was a member of the tuba section in 1952, my wife Shirley developed cancer. The exploratory surgery to see how far it had progressed had to be done at Hopkins during caesarean delivery of my daughter Carol.
Everyone in the band chipped in to pay for this expensive
process (I still remember Joe Riccobene collecting contributions furtively so I weouldn't notice), and were overwhelmingly supportive during this trying time; I was allowed to stay off tours during the ensuing months, and when Shirley finally was taken and I fell apart, our people granted me emergency leave in my absence, so I wouldn't be guilty of desertion!
On a happier note,Carol survived, and is now a happy and healthy mother, and I have great-grandchildren!
Field Band members past and present, I can never thank you enough -- You are the finest friends a guy could have!

I just received information of your website and was thrilled to see information about the 1st Combat Infantry Band under the direction of Chief Warrant Officer, Chester E. Whiting. This was in the year of 1945. I was a member of the band and my rank was sergeant (T4). I was the popular vocalist of the band and also participated in a drum act which I see the US Army Field Band is still using. I still have a lot of information about the 1st combat Infantry Band and I have pictures of when we appeared at Carnegie Hall as well as old programs of various performances. I am 83 years old and still singing. My e-mail address is georgex2@juno.com. I know its been 60 years but I'm hoping to hear from someone soon.Thank you and hope someone finds this of interest.

He was a great teacher and I only wish I had been able to study with him longer. I believe he was a member of the 1st Division Army Band 1940 - 45 and with the Army Field Band from 1946-1960. It was great to find the picture of the band with him sitting solo chair clarinet.
Thanks again!

- New VP of the American Bandmasters Association -- Joe Levine, 04:46:58 03/07/06 Tue (NoHost/70.229.236.187)
From Colonel (Retired) Hal J. Gibson, commander of the Field Band from 1969 - 1974.
--------------------
Special note for the Field Band Retiree and Alumni Association.
At the concluding meeting of the American Bandmasters' Convention on Saturday March 4th, the all important nomination and vote for the new vice president was made. This is important because in two years this person will automatically become president of the ABA, the most prestigious organization of bandleaders in the world. The person selected for this position was Robert Jorgensen, currently the Director of Bands at the University of Akron. In the late 60's and early 70's he was a euphonium soloist with the band. Being elected president of the ABA is one of the highest honors an American band conductor can receive. All of us can share with Bob the pride of this distinctive recognition. Also elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the ABA was COL Finley Hamilton, the current commander. As a part of Bob Jorgensen's introduction it was pointed out that a vital part of his career was his experience as a member of the Army Field Band and his presenter then went on to explain that every conductor of the Field Band from Chet Whiting to today had been a member of the ABA. We are proudly represented in this most highly regarded band organization.

Messages for Dad and our family can be mailed to us at: Jack Thomas, p.o.box 366, Dowagiac, MI 49047. Our phone number is 269-782-2065. Someone is there most times and Dad is there in the evening.
On the positive side, Jack and Julie have two great-grandsons, the newest being Taven. He was born just over a week ago and is their grandson David's boy.
We appreciate the messages we have received and continue to receive.
Thank you.
Dave Thomas

- My dad was a member in 1946 and we're going though a tough time now -- David Thomas, 13:42:54 12/21/04 Tue (dow-gr.qtm.net/216.163.46.38)
My dad could use cheering up, as could our whole family. Mom, Julia Thomas, was diagnosed with end stage cancer just after Thanksgiving, and though it was not a surprise it was a shock. Just a week or so before she was working around the house and helping my sister paint her new home. Anyone who knew dad, or their next of kin, who may have stories to share or just cares to drop him a line can do so at : Jack Thomas, POBox 366, 53992 Rudy, Dowagiac, MI 49047. I've tried to contact bandmates with mixed success and I'm sure that's due to most of them either not being in the alumni association or their being deceased. Mom was the cornerstone of most of the extended family as well, and I, still a confessed "momma's boy" despite my age, have been hit hard, too. My sister, Lauri, has bore the brunt of paperwork; she's a godsend. It's been tough financially, emotionally, in every way. But I'm sure many of you have been though similar pain. I think we will manage to get by though the coming year is going to be real rough. Dad's health is worse than I thought, too. Tobacco has taken a big bite out of our family. I don't mean to depress you with our troubles this holiday but, as friends of dad in what were some of his happiest times, I thought you should know. I had addresses or phone numbers for several of you that I cannot find now. If you remember dad, please drop him a line. I'd especially like to thank Mrs. DePietro, and like to hear from her again, for her nice letter and photo. They were a little damaged in the mail but were a real boost. Also, Mr. Seymour Axelrod, who called dad recently, please call him again. The member list I just saw mentioned others from that time and I hope to hear from them or their families too: Cy Baylor, Edward Carroll, James Clark, William Clark, Don Fejfar, Joe Greco, and Joe Levine....Thank you. I hope you all have a love-filled holidays this season. And that you say a prayer for us........David Thomas, dandrewthomas@hotmail.com

- Update -- George Norman, 17:47:36 08/01/02 Thu (spider-ntc-tc081.proxy.aol.com/198.81.17.56)
Saw the program on TNN recently and what a trip it was! My brother, Lon Norman and I were in the band in the 50's. I was a POP CROONER on the European trip '57, the Japan/Korea trip '58 and 50 of the good old USA States. Lon was an arranger for the band and he is still musically active, in LA, in his 70's. I am retired and live in Oregon.

- Retired Musicians Needed - Winter in Florida -- Elizabeth Lynn, 19:02:53 07/21/02 Sun (pm562-24.dialip.mich.net/35.9.50.26)
Hi, I'm a coordinator for a Naples, Florida big band made up of retirees, many of whom had long careers with military bands. The band's founder has around 1,200 big band charts from the big band era (e.g., the Dorseys, Stan Kenton, Les Elgart, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, etc.). The band members live all around the country and, when they come down to Southwestern Florida, they play for the winter tourists down here.
Right now, we're looking for two key musicians to start practicing with the band in September. The total band runs around to around 17 people with the vocalists, but we all practice and perform locally with no expectation of getting paid (yet). Our first big performance this season is in November at a church in Bonita Springs. We need a new drummer and a keyboard player who can read music and who are familiar with the old big band sound.
Are there any retirees in your organization who spend the winter in Florida who'd like to join us? I'd sure like to get in touch with them!
I can guarantee that the musicians in the group are really nice, the music's terrific, and the crowds down here love it!
Thanks for responding.
Elizabeth Lynn
Naples, FL

Forwarded email from Col. Finley Hamilton:
"The TV program we taped for TNN will be aired on 14 July. We were originally told 3 and 4 July, but that has changed. Also, name of production was changed from "Star Spangled Country" to "Celebrate the Stars and Stripes." We haven't seen finished product yet but believe the production should be quite good. High Five Entertainment's comments have been very positive. Believe program will be aired at 2200hrs but would suggest you verify local listings.
