Modesto Man Fights for Pit Bull Ban

After two pit bulls attacked and killed the family's pet beagle, a Modesto man is spearheading an effort to ban pit-bulls in the city.

Two pit bulls broke through Larry Casias' fence from an adjoining yard and mauled his pet beagle to death. "My beagle never had a chance," said Casias. Even the smaller pit was as big as my beagle. There was no way out for my dog. He's not a biter, not a fighter."

According to Casias, the dogs were rarely chained up. Neighbors say the same dogs killed another puppy last year.

After the attack on the Casias family's beagle, police impounded the pit bulls. Now Larry Casias' family says they'd like to see all pit bulls banned within the Modesto city limits. "I believe that they should not be able to keep that kind of animal," said Randi Casias. "Like a cheetah, it's a wild animal, not a pet."

Larry Casias has vowed to pursue some type of restrictions on the ownership of pit bulls. He's under no illusions that it'll be easy. He knows he'll likely face opposition from owners who say the dogs are not vicious, and that the law won't permit a total ban on a single breed.

The pit bulls who attacked the Casias' beagle were destroyed yesterday morning with the owners consent. The Casias family says it's little comfort after their pet was killed by the dogs.
