Subject: British Rail

I read derogatory comments about British Rail all the time on the Cyber newspapers, but my experience this week was exceptionally good.
My brother-in-law took me to Carlisle Station to catch the 0108 from Carlisle to Watford, and we arrived at 2330 to find the station closed, and it was raining. I stood at the door wondering what to do when the Station Manager came from inside and apologised but let me in to the dry. He had seen drookit me on the cctv. He said the toilets and catering facilities were closed, but if I wanted, I could go with him to the staff rooms for a cup of tea or coffee. He looked at my ticket and told me that as it was an off peak ticket I might not get on the train as it was deemed a peak time ticket. When the train arrived he said he would speak to the train manager. Both those guys went out of their way to help me and found me a seat in the best part of the train. When I got off at Watford, I offered the Manager 20 quid for his help and he laughed at me. Said because I was a QOS supporter, I needed all the help I could get. I forgot I was still wearing the Queens' scarf. Got the bus from Watford to Heathrow for 7 quid, (as opposed to 17 quid for the Heathrow Express from Paddington)and flew on from there nae borra. The bus driver was very helpful too, and gave me a hand putting my baggage in the hold.
I found that being polite to people really helps when you are in difficulties. Shouting and screaming just gets their backs up.
At Heathrow, they have installed this "self-check-in" system on computers when you arrive at the departures. I pushed a few buttons and nothing happened. Then, a very nice wee lassie, in an airport uniform, came and pushed a few more buttons for me, and I was straight through to departures. Two hours to kill and I had the "full English" breakfast for less than it cost me in Lockerbie. A definite change to the attitude of these people, since I was last there 18 months ago.
