Subject: A Scotsman confused by money?

Isn't it a pain in the arse when you go to pay for drinks in a Welsh pub and pull rubles out of your wallet? Yes, I know, it happens to all of us but it's still annoying.

I found 73,000 rubles in my wallet last week, along with some Swiss francs, tucked away in the for-emergencies-only pocket. They had been there for years so I decided to cash them in. I ckecked the exchange rate for Russian rubles on the internet and calculated that I had about 1,400 quid's worth. Holy shit! I couldn't work out how I had accumulated such a sum. I've been to Russia many times but surely I wouldn't have exchanged as much as that over the years. I redid the sums and kept getting the same figure. With redundancy looming I thought I'd better get this small fortune changed into good old British cash as soon as possible.

Doubt saved me from making an arse of myself at the bank. I looked at images of Russian banknotes on wikipedia and they didn't look like the ones I had. After much trawling through memories of places I'd been to I remembered a visit to Belarus four years ago. Sure enough the images of their ruble banknotes on wikipedia matched mine. And the true value? About seventeen quid.

Ah well.

Belarus, the place where I was offered prostitutes by thugs in the bar of the hotel I stayed in and threatened with shooting when I refused. A night spent in my room with the furniture piled up against the door because the thugs seemed to have the blessing of the hotel management and the awareness that I was the only westerner in the entire effing town of Novopolotsk.

But that's another story.
