This "big brother" stuff is very worrying until you consider the logistics of it. In the UK there are politicians who want social networking web sites monitored, especially those with images and videos. Somebody commented in a newspaper that one of the leading image-sharing web sites receives about 4,000 uploads every minute. That's six million new images every day. Imagine the army of people that would be required to monitor that!

The same goes for e-mails, where the number sent in a single day in the UK has to be several million. Who on earth is going to scrutinise all of those? My opinion is this: There is indeed government software with dictionaries of keywords that sift it all. Words like "Osama" or "bomb" would be useless as they are innocently used constantly. The important keywords are ones we've never heard of; names of people under surveillance, code-words obtained from criminals/terrorists during police interviews, combinations of words linked to a suspected plot etc. I often get frustrated that my e-mails to family and friends don't get any responses. It would be hugely egotistical to think that government agencies are paying more attention to what I send.

We struggle to be heard in the brief time we have in this world. Perhaps we should hope that some nameless government official will read what we have to say, even if nobody else does. Being ignored is the default setting for most of us billions of people.

There is a big friendly ear in the Blether Bar however. When the FBI, MI5, MI6 and other agencies don't give a shit and tell you to stop bothering them and desist from dancing provocatively in front of their cameras we'll pull up a chair in front of the log fire and say "so, tell me, I'm interested......."
