Who said there had to be an inferior group? Correct me if I'm wrong, am I not the one who has been pleading with other correspondents on this site to drop their racist viewpoints?

As far as i'm concerned, there have been a raft of admirable and world-changing achievements by the people of this island, Protestant and Catholic, north and south. We have produced great inventors, great sportspeople, great writers, great musicians etc. For a population of a few million, this island (both parts) punches well above its weight despite its obvious hindrances (the blight of terrorism being the most significant one).

Oh yes, before I forget and as promised, I have reproduced some research material below which illustrates the plight of Protestants in the Free State (the predecessor of the Republic of Ireland). Please remember that, as a stoic people, the Irish Protestants generally did not carp on about the injustices levied upon them. But as I say, a massively diminished population in less than 70 years surely must point to a host of underlying factors. Have no fear, however - despite their determination to get on with life and "turn the other cheek", the story of these truly oppressed people is only just beginning to come out.

This extract gives a flavour of the genocidal torture endured by Protestants unlucky enough to be caught south of the border after partition. I can post more if you like.

Extracted from a public lecture delivered by Dr Noel Browne at Queen's University.

"Far from creating in his part of the island a genuinely fair and just pluralist society, in which members of minority religions could rear their families, walk the streets in dignity, and in the words of the Proclamation, "enjoy freedom of religious expression, freedom of conscience, freedom of information, equal rights, and equal opportunities," de Valera gave Rome a free hand under a crude, unfeeling system of "separate development" and religious "apartheid" which would ensure that the Irish republic would become a Catholic state for a Catholic people... .

Over a period of years, the slow inexorable inevitable consequence of this policy was the systematic progressive depopulation of the new Irish state of its Protestant people.

Justifying the sacking of a properly appointed librarian in Mayo, because, though highly qualified, she was a Protestant, de Valera argued in June 1930: "I say the people of Mayo, in a county where I think 98% of the population is Catholic, are justified in insisting on a Catholic librarian." He went on to widen the issue, and asserted: "a Protestant doctor ought not to be appointed as a dispensary doctor in a mainly Catholic area." Black South Africa comes to mind, does it not?

There being virtually no significant non-Catholic areas, the consequence of this policy, nationally, was obvious. In effect Protestants need not apply signs went up all over the Republic. Incidentally, it is interesting to note the make-up of the Mayo Library Committee. It consisted of a Catholic bishop, five Catholic priests, a Christian Brother, a Protestant rector and four laymen. The voting, ten to two "for" sacking the Protestant."

Speaks for itself, dunnit?

PS Paddy, I'm sure we could enjoy a debate over a pint except for the fact that you continue to espouse the murder of people who hold a democratic wish to remain British. Nationalists pose no ideological problems for me, I count many among my close circle of mates, but those who would murder to gain political advantage are nothing but anathema.
