Continuity IRA says arms move is an 'act of treason'

The Continuity IRA has pledged that it will continue to resist British rule in Ireland following the Provisional IRA's action on decommissioning.
In a statement last night, CIRA condemned the Provisional IRA's action which it said was "an act of treachery unparalleled in the history of republican resistance". It urged nationalists to support its campaign against British rule in Ireland.CIRA is the only republican paramilitary group not officially on ceasefire. Although it has been unable to mount a sustained campaign, British Army and RUC sources say it continues to pose a security threat. It has carried out sporadic gun and bomb attacks since 1996.
Last year, an RUC officer was seriously injured in a CIRA bomb attack in Castlewellan, Co Down. CIRA has also been responsible for bomb attacks on security bases and commercial premises in Banbridge, Portadown and Enniskillen. In its statement, the CIRA leadership said: "The actions of the Provisionals in completing the surrender of Irish republican arms is an act of treachery unparalleled in the history of republican resistance to British imperial rule.
"It has further outraged all those who have struggled for, and remain committed to, the all-Ireland Republic. The Provisionals have now committed the ultimate treachery and must be viewed as absolutely no different from the quislings who have come before and who also bought into British colonial rule in Ireland.
"Voicing its opposition to partition, CIRA said: "We take this opportunity to reassert the right of Irish men and women to continue resistance to British colonial rule in Ireland and we call on all Irish republicans opposed to this act of treason to rally to the cause and support the Irish republican movement in the honourable task that lies before it.
"In an implicit acknowledgement of the current weakness of militant republicanism, the group added: "The fight may now appear even more unequal but we will never sully or besmirch the name of all those who have given their lives for Irish freedom. Shame on those who by their treacherous actions have done this. "CIRA is most active in the Louth/Monaghan area and along the Donegal/Fermanagh border. Traditionally, it has been weak in Belfast but is known to have recruited new members in the north and west of the city in the past year. Two years ago it carried out a gun attack on Woodbourne RUC station in west Belfast.
