i did hewell grange and onley recall centre in the late 1960's.met good and bad people alike,including screws.i was young 17-18-19.hewell grange was a former stately home and the atmosphere there was a welcome relief from the allocation wing at wormwood scrubs.having said that,i got head butted and my nose busted the first week i was there,but looking back i was probably a bit gobby.did a couple of runners and nearly got sent to reading borstal but was saved by the skin of my teeth by a house master who thought i deserved another chance.wonder if i would have survived reading if not for him ? this was the reading of violence,hot bath scaldings and deaths caused by officers against inmates,not to mention the suicides.i dont know if the enquiry that followed sent any of the screws to prison but i very much doubt it.anyway,back to hewell,i do not have any really bad memories of this place and the fact it was an open borstal made my stay there a bit more bearable.when i was discharged i had done 18 months because of my runners, my gob and attitude.the average discharge was 9 months.im not bragging,just telling it as it was.strange how as you get older you stop running from your problems, learn to control your gob and get proper attitude.onley was another story,did about 4 months of the 6 down the block.glad its all in the past now.it was a learning experiance--a part of my life.by the way before i go,its funny the amount of guys ive met that brag they did borstal and when you ask them which one, they cant remember or are real evasive.bullshit, you never forget.
