>hello sean, I was a teenage joyrider's passenger during the 1990's.....as a girl in care we liked the boys with fast cars, even if they weren't actualy their own vehicles...ppl who stole cars, as far I could gather, were young, white, working class lads, most of which had been in YOI's or the care system...the knowledge was gleaned from fellow scallywags, and the more sophisticated wisdoms came from boys who'd done bird for TWOC.. once in the cars they were used to either-get home after a night out..or take home swag from burgularies.., yet our lads mainly stole em to show off, and have somewhere to drop acid, although they did go out of town to partkae of a few smash-n-grabs...I think that rather than provoke the coppers into chasing u u had to "take the chase",so to speak, because if the coppers grabbed u u'd get a good kicking...we stole shitty motors, not for speed, but for ease of access, and because if you did happen to pull up next to PC Plod at the lights u could at least pretend it was ur car...to get into a car the best way was to bend the drivers door back,: that way u could bend it bk into position once inside and it didn't look as obvious to any fellow drivers when stopped at the lights- often times once u'd wrenched off the plastic from the steering column it was a trial and error job to start em, often when "hotwiring" the lights or horn or wipers would be activated instead, and eventually they learnt to put a yale key in the broken steering column so u could stop/start vehicle...I was only nicked once, and took b4 the court for TWOC and going equipped, but at 14 at that time there was nothing they could do to juvies, except put u in a "lock-up" (aka a secure unit)...which never happened to me, thankfully...mainly becuase I was one of the few who went to school, which always looked good b4 the "beak"..most of our wee gang ended up back in a YOI, where they added to their criminal skills repetoire with the most up-to-date info...I actually didn't find it joyful, taking a chase from rabid coppers with a 17 year old uninsured driver who'd dropped three tabs of acid after we'd just screwed someone's house, but hey, I never mentioned it, cos that wouldn't have been cool...lol... thats probly no use to u, but hey, them's the breaks..
