Hi all....Funny that i should find myself looking at this forum, it just so happens that I have just recently aquired the movie 'Scum'...I have now and again told my wife the odd tale of my wayward past and what life in Borstal was actually like. In my opinion, after going through numerous approved schools (Essex Home School...Redhill....Carlton...) and several Borstals (Onley in Rugby...Feltham....and eventually an open borstal whose name now eludes me), the film 'Scum' kind of encompasses it all, from shoveling coal for the boiler house (did that at Onley), to seeing someone get coshed with a snooker ball in a sock in 'South House' at Feltham(The victim lost 3 teeth and needed 4 stitches in his mouth), all the way through to sexual bullying through to loosing ones 'wages' to the 'Daddy'. I personally think that yeh, 'Scum' is a movie, but I have been there,I absconded at least 14 times or more (Hence ending up at Feltham)so I know what I saw and experienced, as anyone who has 'done Borstal' will know....you don't forget! I think 'Scum' represents Borstal life pretty well for those that aren't that clued up and are interested. I saw quite a few sadistic or bent screws too.....mainly at Feltham I might add, dunno why that should have been, could have been something to do with it being a psyciactric Borstal too....maybe it needed a few psyco screws to work there...it's a logical asumption...isn't it?
I guess that collectively, my lifes experiences (Including Borstal) helped to make me who I am today, I think I'm pretty Ok nowadays (I'm 49 now and did Borstal 1974-1977 = 2 lots of 6-2 as it was known), but there is the odd moment that I would just so love to come face to face, one to one, with one or two people that I have particular memories of, as they say......it's always best served cold....you know what I mean....thankfully it's just idle thinking....so far...Lol...Besides, to lug it around with me all my life would be really dumb and destructive, but such a fate has befalled many an ex Borstal boy...I'm sure...suffice to say 'twas a life changing experience, luckily it changed me for the better....Eventually!
