In the closed institution (the crum) everthing was taken from the visitor. Absolutely everything apart from the clothes on their back.
In the open institution there was a cursory search but mothers/ girlfriends were allowed to keep their personal effects.
All the trainees were vigorously searched straight afterwards before contact with each other, It is possible that some contaband got through but nobody wanted to get caught because the punishment was loss of visits. Not easy when you are in your teens.
