Screws basically did nothing back then other than check the cells to see if everyone was there. What happened was that one screw would walk down one side of the landing switching all the lights on then another would walk down 2 minutes later and turn them off. That way the boys were seriously pissed off and the screws could say that nobody had climbed through the bars to the outside world. Any interruption to this pathetic routine was subject to trumped up charges and summary justice.
