If you rang the bell, a screw might come and jab a sharp piece of timber up yer arsehole - thus ringing the bell gave rise to a fence.

To be serious: when I was a nipper in various of HM institutions, the ringing of the cell bell for any reason whatsoever often gave cause for a couple of screws to kick the shit out of the inmate. It disturbed their quiet life.

I saw this often in Wormwood Scrubs Borstal Allocation wing, where the screws, often built like brick shithouses, gave kickings to the young lads.

I could tell you a thing or two pal. The Scum film tried to get the idea over - the rape scene was spot on - Everthorpe closed was rife with horrible brutes forcing others to their perverted wills.
