"Reigne' on parade
by Tim Yap
Inquirer, October 23,2004
She may have gotten flack from some prude televiewers for flaunting some flesh, but one thing's for sure, Regine Velasquez will always make a statement--loud and clear.
Even from her "immerse-in-the-river" vocalization days, Regine has been known for stretching the boundaries and driving it to fever pitch, glassbreaking decibels. Her fashion sense causes much debate. If Bob Mackie had a Filipina muse, then she would be it. All out--is how I would describe it--whether belting out a tune or donning the right dress, the songbird does not do anything halfbaked. I have long admired this luscious lass from her Louie Mamengo long gown glam days to her present Rajo Laurel revealing "bare-it-all" for the masses glitz. She knows her stature and will mince no words(or clothes, for that matter)in order to prove it.
Lifting a page from J. Lo and Beyonce's fashion empires, Regine puts her hand into designing clothes for divas and for and would be divas. Her line, made available by Sari-Sari and produced in Hong Kong, is playfully called "Reigne". With sophisticated cuts that offer subtle(and not so subtle) peek-a-boos of flesh, her initial collection is designed with a particular woman in mind--someone who is not afraid to stand out in a crowd and celebrate her sensuality--very much like the designer herself. "It's a great collection comprised mainly of classic black, with sensous silhouettes tailored from soft fluid fabrics. Reigne's first collection has separates like sexy off shoulder tops and mini skirts and cocktail dresses that will make you feel like a diva--and not just look like one,"said Sari-Sari's sartoria songstress Denise Albert. Nor to say that she is not the same humble girl we saw on TV competing onstage pre American Idol, pre Pinoy Pop Superstar, pre Star Search eras. I'm sure every time she gets to escape the kleig lights, she would opt for a giant T-shirt and jeans, sans make up--and just enjoy herself. But for now, it's all glam, glam, glam...
