Is this a sign of the times? I grant that we are indeed in a bad way and the future is so uncertain but Filipinos have never been known to shy away from enjoying themselves. Have we become so nostalgic for the glories of the past that all we want to listen to today are the old songs? Are we not anymore looking forward to the round of celebrating that comes with the Yuletide Season? Year in and year out until now, the hit sounds of the last quarter of the year usually included party sounds to dance to.
Not this year though. I hear the Hot Babes singing Kikay in the tiangges and the enduring Ray Conniff recordings of Christmas carols in the malls. No dance tunes. And take a look at what even the younger singers have recorded. Rachelle Ann Go has Dont Cry Out Loud and Christian Bautista has Hands to Heaven. As for the biggest selling albums by Filipino artists at this moment, these are Covers by Regine Velasquez, Anthology by Side A and Unforgettable by Martin Nievera. These are all made up of old songs.
Covers, the latest album from Regine turned Platinum barely a week after release. That means over 30,000 copies sold. It is now number one in the hit charts of the leading music outlets, Tower Records, Odyssey and Music One and lots of people are buying more copies. They buy because they enjoy listening to Regine. They also buy because they want to check out what she has done with the old songs she covers.
Covers is made up of cover versions of works popularized by male Filipino artists and written by Filipino composers and listening to them really makes you proud. Filipinos do have this gift for beautiful melodies and meaningful lyrics and I am glad that these songs have been successfully revived and will draw attention to other works by local artists.
The songs included are Each Day with You and Ikaw ang Lahat Sa Akin which were first recorded by Martin Nievera; Hang On and Di Bale Na Lang by Gary Valenciano; Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin by Ariel Rivera; Araw Gabi by Nonoy Zuņiga; Forevermore and Only You by Side A; Akoy Iyong-iyo by Ogie Alcasid; Paalam, Say That You Love Me and Kailan by Basil Valdez; Perfect by True Faith and Mahal Na Mahal Kita by Archie D.

Ayan platinum na. To think na maraming mga tao dyan na puro negative ang comments about the album. Basta ako, I love her new album and her selections are just right.
I was in the Philippines for almost a month, at sobrang enjoy ang bakasyon ko. I was able to see Regine's latest videos on MYX, and of course her acoustic MYX live performance for her Covers album. I was even able to have it recorded on VCD for my friends to enjoy here in the States. I was also fortunate to witness her mall promo for Covers at The Podium. Swerte at coincedence lang talaga that I thought of going to The Podium to shop. Ang galing-galing ni Lola Reg. As usual, she sounded better live compared sa kanyang recording. Kakatuwa 'yong mga pasosyal, kunyari pa coffee-coffee lang sila, pero nakikinig naman, I even caught a lot of them singing along with Regine. Pero ako, talagang nakipagsiksikan ako para makita si Songbird na nagpe-perform. The day after that I went to Greenbelt to buy her CD, at sobrang happy ako when I saw her CD as the number 1 selling album sa charts. So buy agad ako ng 11 copies for pasalubongs. Siempre tuwang-tuwa naman ang mga pinasalubungan ko noh.
Ewan ko ba sa mga reklamador dito sa board na 'to. It seems na lahat na lang yata na gagawin ni Regine ay mali. Pero kita nyo naman, obvious na mabenta pa rin ang lola natin dahil platinum na ang Covers. Tungkol naman sa boses ni Regine sa mga recordings nya. Hay naku, lumang observation na yan. Alam naman ng lahat na pang LIVE talaga ang boses ni Reg, at ok lang sa recording. I was never a fan of Regine until I heard her sing live. You could really appreciate her singing in her live performances than in her recordings, and that is what makes her awesome. Karamihan dyan ng mga singers ay magaling lang sa recording, ngunit wala namang binatbat pag live na. Either they change the arrangement, or they lower the key para makaya nilang kantahin ang songs nila ng live. Kaya impress talaga ako kay Regine, kasi mas magaling sya pag live. Tingnan nyo naman ang over-rated na si Jasmine, maganda nga ang boses sa mga recordings nya, palpak naman sa mga live performances nya. Or even Sarah (not to take anything away from her), every time she sings "Forever's not Enough" palaging shaky ang pagkanta nya, so I would always go back to her recording kasi mas maganda talaga ang sa recording nya. 'Yon ba ang impressive? Sa recording oo, e kahit sino naman pwedeng pagandahin ang boses sa recording no.

I agree with what you said shanikwa, maybe why some fans doesn't like it because they want regine to do an all original album, but fans/pipol are part to be blame, lets face the fact that "revivals" sells easily (i.e. Reigne is not as successful as R2K)
