Subject: "Reigning... Still" (Dec. 4) + pic link

The first time I heard the title of the major concert of Regine Velasquez
for 2004, I felt that it was presumptuous and perhaps, for others, it was
pretentious. The title was unexpected coming from one of the most grounded
artists around. However, having it was good somehow because it raised the
bar for Regine. For her to boldly use that concert title, she had to prove
it. And she did!

Taking my seat thirty minutes before showtime, I thought to myself that it
just be so hard to be in Regine's position at that moment since a full venue
was waiting for a spectacular performance. I was also wondering why the
stage looked plain - too plain for a show of big magnitude. It was black and
its front and middle did not have anything, not even a single chair. The
band - all in black - occupied the back part, they were spread out. Soon, I
knew I made a mistake because the stage was just right for the special
effects.

Spring

The show started with thunder and rain. There was really water going down at
the front of the stage. Eric Mana entered along with the Hotlegs in
costumes. Regine in a Marie Antoinette gold ballgown and white wig, began to
sing "Could It Be Magic" (by Barry Manilow) and stayed at the middle of the
stage. Needless to point out, Eric performed magic tricks throughout the
song. The best one was the last. He was at the middle of the stage while
Regine and the dancers left. In a few seconds, Regine appeared beside him
wearing a pink dance outfit.

"Toxic" (by Britney Spears) immediately followed. Regine sang and dance with
gusto. The crowd cheered her on. After putting on a skirt, she launched to
her own hits medley ("Tuwing Umuulan," "Kung Maibabalik Ko Lang," "Pangako"
and "Dadalhin"). This medley was enjoyed by the people immensely. They
screamed whenever she started a song. It was so clear that her voice was in
top form that night. Wind was blowing on her path, she walked from one end
to the other end. When the medley ended, she began talking. She greeted the
audience and joked about the weather. She said that the concert title should
be "typhoon... still." A girl shouted, "I love you, Regine!" Regine
retorted, "sana lalake ka."

Summer

They light up the stage to signal a change of season and mood. Regine and
Andrew E. did "'Di Bale na Lang." It was only Andrew who rapped in the song.
He was effective in rousing the crowd. He won over the crowd to participate
(clap and shout "ho" and "Regine") at his command. What came next were
heartfelt renditions of "Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin" and "Pangarap Ko'y
Ikaw." Their videos were shown on the big screens (three) while Regine sang
them.

Regine went backstage and the three promising singers in yellow dresses got
onstage one by one. First was Sarah Geronimo who did "To Love You More."
Second was Sheryn Regis singing "Come On In Out of the Rain." The last one
was Kyla who performed "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" pretty well. Among the
three, Kyla had the warmest reception. This was due to her being able to
show her ability more which was partly because her song was extended. Before
Regine came out in a fabulous yellow gown with plunging neckline and long
train, I heard the guy beside me say, "iba pa rin ang boses ni Regine." I
could not agree more! The clarity of her voice and her control over it are
simply incomparable. Hopefully, the three young singers will have that
mastery in a few years time. Regine's superiority became more evident when
they did "In Your Eyes" and "And I'm Telling You (I'm Not Going)." When it
was Regine's turn, the song sounded not just good but great. Sarah was like
a school girl, she clapped her hands while holding the microphone whenever
Regine belted. Regine, on the other hand, egged the three in reaching the
high notes when it was their turn. They were given a standing ovation for
this number. Then she introduced them in the most humble manner, "ito po ang
mga bagong reyna na naghahari sa industriya ng musika... I'm so proud of
these girls, you can't imagine how proud I am of them... Kasi po parang
katulad ko sila noong nag-start... Thank you so much girls! Ang galing 'no!"
She made fun of how difficult the number was, she called it the "patayan"
medley. Sarah was so awed by Regine, she was the first to blurt: "we love
you, Miss Regine!" To move to the next number ("I Will Love Again"), Regine
said, "o sige, tama na. Ang lola naman..." that drew a lot of laughter.

Autumn

Leaves started falling and the dancers wore jackets. Regine came out in this
sexy blue dress. It was fully beaded and since Regine was always on the
spotlight, we could see the form of her body. I froze when she turned and
walked because it was like we were seeing her white buttocks. One should
definitely see her wearing it since my description cannot give justice to
that dress. The moment she got to the stage, she sang the emotional "Say
That You Love Me."

There was a sudden shift of pace when they chose to have a playtime segment.
They did her acoustic songs in this part: "Perfect," "Ako'y Iyong-Iyo" and
"Ang Aking Awitin." I could not believe how gutsy Regine could be. She went
down the stage, teased and posed for people in that outfit! She spotted Ogie
Alcasid (with his parents) in the audience so she asked him to sing a few
lines in "Ako'y Iyong-Iyo" then later ribbed him, "...show ko 'to!"

Once the crowd settled down, Regine sang "Tell Me" alone at first. Ariel
Rivera came out from the middle of the venue and walked towards the stage to
sing with her. Regine introduced him as "...my ex - Mr. Ariel Rivera!" The
audience roared. Ariel got startled that when he exited, he went the wrong
way and said aloud, "nawala tuloy ako... sira ulo... ikaw talaga Regine,
kung anu-ano ang sinasabi mo!" Regine just guided him to the right path and
said, "bye!"

"Kailan," the most physically and visually demanding number soon followed.
While Regine was giving us a heartbreaking performance, the Hotlegs were
doing their moves hanging on two strips of white cloth. The Hotlegs truly
showed the stuff they are made of.

Winter

There was the sound of snowstorm and snow-like matter began falling onstage.
Then came my favorite part in the show - the rock medley (with Francis
Magalona) and "In the Name of Love" (with the San Miguel Master Chorale). I
loved those numbers because they were so different. I have always liked "In
the Name of Love" (by U2). I never thought Regine would
one day sing it in a concert. Who would not be amazed with the rock medley?
It was so brilliant when they merged "Point of Authority" (by Linkin Park)
and "Bring Me to Life" (by Evanescence). Regine's outfit (leather pants,
studded bra, black fur bolero, leather gloves and silver belt and necklace)
matched her singing with an attitude.

Before the "In the Name of Love" number, Regine stripped off her gloves and
bolero and put on a red, backless robe. It took her some time to wear the
robe. When she was fixing it, she was rambling: "para hindi ako patayin ng
tatay ko." Afterwards, she sang "Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw" with Jasmine Trias on
video. I do not know if they did it because Smart Communications was the
show's sponsor or because there was Jasmine mania recently or because of
both. Regine did good in blending with Jasmine but the song elicited a weak
response from the audience. I want to think that the people had already
realized that Jasmine does not give a great shake and home-grown talents
have a lot more to show. Some girls shouted from the stands: "kay Regine pa
rin kami." Regine understood it badly that she asked, "ano, minumura n'yo
'ko?" That brought the house down.

It was time for Regine to thank the sponsors and production staff and
introduce the members of the band. She did so then she became sentimental.
She expressed her gratitude to all the people who believed in her, gave her
all sorts of projects and continue to support her - boss Vic del Rosario of
the Viva Entertainment Group, GMA-7, her parents and her fans. When she was
talking about her parents, she was already crying. She was choking in her
emotions at the first song of the "Believe" medley. She made up for it in
the next song and finished the medley strong. It was the final number so she
went backstage.

Of course, there was an encore. But, it took Regine quite a while to get
back onstage. Probably because of the change in outfit. She emerged at the
middle of the stage and did Michael Jackson dance steps. I did not know
whether to laugh or take it seriously. Thus, I sensed this number failed.
Vocally, not one Michael Jackson song pose a challenge to Regine. However,
when it comes to the dance steps... well, Regine is not a natural dancer.
Maybe if they did a dance medley not of Michael Jackson, it would have
worked. But, I got to give it to Regine for putting so much effort in this
medley. Fortunately, there was another encore - "Shine." This was the
perfect way to end the show because she soared in this song.

The show does not just confirm if Regine is "reigning still." It more
importantly presents an answer to the question of what makes her reign. Is
it by getting all the right breaks? But, that would make her the luckiest
and not the best. The way I see it, she is the best because she consistently
delivers in all the opportunities given to her. She always steps up and
gives everything she's got.

Curious lang ako, magkakaiba kasi and lumalabas na news sa mga newspapers napuno niya ba ang Araneta sa second day ng Reigning Still? Kasi yung first day niya na nakapanood ako eh 60-70% lang ang attendace (though not bad as we just experienced bad weather).

thanks to receiving reply.
