You read that article where Regine put things
on the line by defending Sarah Geronimo?

Now that's the Regine Velasquez I know about.

And that people is just one reason why this site
and its music men defend that girl. Because she
deserves to be defended against those with their
bad intentions.

She's still 'reason enough.'

Teen talents shouldn't
be overworked
Posted: 6:46 PM (Manila Time) | Jul. 22, 2004
Inquirer News Service

WE'RE glad that, like us, Regine Velasquez has spoken up to sadly decry Sarah Geronimo's being so overworked despite the fact that she's only in her mid-teens.

Having also started as a performer when she was in her early teens, Regine knows how excessive the show biz demands on young entertainers can be.

Give Sarah a break, we both say. Don't keep pushing her into one project after another, with no time for rest and recreation--not to mention studying.

Sure, local show biz talents are urged to make hay while the sun shines (because it may rain tomorrow). But when they're young, they shouldn't be treated like workhorses--nor should they become their families' breadwinners.

Have a heart. Teen stars may be busy with recording, live singing, TV and movie acting, mall shows and provincial road tours that are designed to make them popular and wealthy, but what's the good of stardom if they work themselves to the point of exhaustion and burnout before they reach young adulthood?

Some show biz veterans point out that stars like Gloria Romero, Hilda Koronel and Susan Roces also started their careers when they were barely past adolescence. But, the difference is, those veteran and admired performers concentrated on acting, while some of today's young talents are doing practically everything. So the stress and pressure they're experiencing is worse.

Sarah's exhaustion has been telling on her singing voice, and she's being criticized for it. To make things worse, she's being made to belt in the loud "birit" style that strains the vocal cords even more than other kinds of singing, so she's really been having a hard time.

Let's hope the people handling her realize the strain that Sarah has been having to contend with ever since she won her singing championship. The attendant fame and fortune may be wonderful, but a mid-teener needs to enjoy her youth.

Another overworked teen is Star Circle Quest winner Hero Angeles, who was recently shown on TV going from one show biz commitment to another, with practically no time to rest.

Hero "jokingly" recounted that he once complained to his handlers that they didn't schedule any "rest and recreation" for him. It was all work and making hay, and while he was grateful for all the breaks coming his way, his relentless work schedule was telling on his health.

Other young starlets and stars should also complain when they're being overworked. Their handlers may mean well, but all work and no time for childhood or teen fun makes a young performer a potentially troubled--and very exhausted--youth!
