Tom Cruise honors honest Filipino cabbie
When he was interviewed on “Unang Hirit,” honest New York cabbie Nestor Sulpicio (he came home to receive an award from the Department of Tourism) said with pride that he had the chance to meet Hollywood actor Tom Cruise during the media blitz for the actor’s latest movie “Collateral,” which is being released in the Philippines by Solar-UIP. Solar Films bigwig Wilson Tieng said Nestor truly brought honor to the country with his honesty.
Nestor became a celebrity and gained international prominence when he returned a backpack containing black pearls amounting to $70,000 (equivalent to R3.93 million) which was left in his cab by a male passenger. He had to go find the owner that very same night even if he lived quite far from his place.
Asked if he never had second thoughts about returning the bag, Nestor said it crossed his mind but “nanaig ang magandang pangaral ng mga magulang ko — honesty.” He had financial difficulties at that time, he said. He was three months behind his rental, and he had other financial obligations. But the bag wasn’t his so he had to return it.
And now because of his honesty, the 46-year- old has become an international celebrity. “I thank the media for making me a celebrity,” he said on TV. “Malaki ang nagawa ng media to make me famous, kasi sila ang nagbigay ng exposure sa akin.” When Tom Cruise read about it, he expressed desire to meet Nestor and he invited him to attend a promotional event for “Collateral,” in New York.
That was the time the New York City Government (led by the Mayor) gave Nestor recognition and awarded him for his honesty.
Tom Cruise got interested in Nestor because “Collateral” features a taxi driver (Jamie Foxx) who became an accidental hero when he gunned down the ultimate assassin during Cruise’s one–night of killing spree. In the movie, Cruise plays an offbeat role, as Vincent, a cold-blooded killer, something he played very effectively. As a hired assassin, Vincent was going to kill five persons on that single night that he met the cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx).
“Collateral,” directed by Michael Mann and which was a topgrosser when it opened in US theaters, is now on its third week run in Metro Manila cinemas.
