KLASIK Kayumanggi,” presented at the Cultural Center of the Philippines by The San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra and The San Miguel Master Chorale, and with the country’s all – time favorite balladeer Basil Valdez and Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez was truly a night of splendor.
Songs of yesterday and the songs of contemporary times were brought out in vocal numbers as well as inpurely orchestral renditions.
Masterfully arranged and conducted by Ryan Cayabyab, after having listened to songs including – Nonoy Gallardo’s "Saranggola ni Pepe"; George Canseco’s "Hanggang sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan", "Kastilyong Buhangin," "Ngayon at Kailanman," "Salamin ng Buhay" and "Ngayon"; Willy Cruz’s "Never Ever Say Goodbye", "Pangarap na Bituin", "Bituing Walang Ningning" and "Sana’y Wala ng Wakas"; Buhawi Meneses’ "Mr. Suave"; L. Doming & Bert Dominic’s "Bikining Itim"; Mike Hanopol’s "Katawan" and "Lagot Ka"; T. Mousse & Errol Rennals’ "Sex Bomb"; Lito Camo & Erwin Dela Cruz’ "Bakit Papa"; Lito Camo’s "Spaghetti Song", "Otso-Otso" and "Bulaklak"; and for finale Poem by Jose Rizal, music by Ryan Cayabyab’s "Mi Ultimo Adios" – the audience wanted more.
The whole program was conducted by Maestro Ryan Cayabyab with The San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra and The San Miguel Master Chorale with songs like – Ryan Cayabyab’s "Ilocandia"; Constancio De Guzman’s "Maalaala Mo Kaya"; Josefino Cenizal’s "Hindi Kita Malimot"; Santiago Suarez’ "Katakataka"; Mike Velarde’s "Dahil Sa Iyo"; Ernani Cuenco’s "Bato sa Buhangin", "Kalesa", "Gaano Ko Ikaw Kamahal"; and "Da Coconut Nut", "Tsismis", "Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka", Iduyan Mo", "Awit ng Pagsinta", and "Paraiso."
And three (3) encores were rendered: "Kay Ganda Ng Ating Musika", "Limang Dipang Tao" and "Hibang Sa Pagibig."
Despite the voluminous sound of the orchestra never were the singers of the San Miguel Master Chorale drowned out or overwhelmed.
And very enthusiastically applauded were the purely-orchestral numbers such as "Ilocandia", "Saranggola ni Pepe" and "Otso-Otso, Atbp."
Very welcome were the numbers with guest artists Basil Valdez and Regine Velasquez.
As were the humorous remark by Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, including: "We have played Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner, but it is when we play ‘Otso-Otso’ that we are most heartily applauded."
The songs of contemporary composers George Caseco (by Basil) and Willy Cruz (by Regine) were unfamiliar to us, but we hope to gain more familiarity with them in the near future.
The evening’s success amounted to a personal triumph for that musical wizard composer, arranger and conductor Ryan Cayabyab, who wielded the baton for nearly three hours with outstanding skill and unabated verve and energy.
"Bravo" to Ryan Cayabyab, the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra and the San Miguel Master Chorale for keeping alive or beautiful, beautiful "Kayumanggi" songs. Brown is Beautiful.
