Regine Says She's Proud of 'Search for a Star' Contestants
by Cris O. Ramos Jr.
WELL, it's cool that you get to tour Europe and the States,
but it's still hard to imagine having to go through that in a span
of a month or so.
Consider Regine Velasquez's itinerary: a tour of four European
cities including Vienna and Frankfurt, a repeat concert with
Ogie Alcasid this weekend and a 6-week tour of the States.
It's quite a taxing itinerary for any human being to fathom,
but then again, you don't get to be hailed as
the "Songbird" if you ain't up to the challenge, right?
It's quite commendable that Regine recently even found
the time to present the grand finalists to the Search for a Star
Grand Finals in a recent press conference held last week.
Despite a face that has "fatigue," all over it, Regine couldn't help
but muster the strength to express how proud she was of her
10 new prot's, namely, Tina Braganza (15 years old, from
San Pedro, Laguna), the statuesque 5'8 Jerriane Mae Templo
(14, Quezon City), Iris Malazarte (17, Angeles City), Sarah Jean
Badana (15, Cebu City), Romelo Valena (23, Quezon Province),
Rachelle Ann Go (17), Cheryl Obasa (19, Binangonan, Rizal),
Ma. Camille Relevo (17, Las Pinas), Raymond Manalo (20,
Angeles, Pampanga) and Genevieve Villabroza.
"I'm proud of all them and how they developed as the
competition progressed," says Regine. "They're all talented
and they all have star quality and appeal. When they first started
out, mahiyain pa sila but now they have the confidence and the
presence. They all deserve to win."
As for predictions on what it will take for any of them to win
on the big night, Regine only has this to say, "I guess it will
all boil down on who'll be able to handle the pressure.
When Sarah [Geronimo] appeared during the Grand Finals
of Star for a Night, poised and confident despite the fact that
there was no more tomorrow, kutob ko na siya na ang mananalo.
Hindi lang pataasan ng boses ang labanan ngayon."
Being a product of a talent competition herself (that's Bagong
Kampeon to you new schoolers) Regine knows the glaring
differences between talent shows then and now. For starters,
Regine's grand winning purse of P20,000 pales in comparison
with this year's Grand Prize of P1,000,000 plus a recording/movie
contract, house and lot care of Crown Asia. Another glaring
difference is the 'Reality T.V.' factor, stemming from the
worldwide success show American Idol. And the Viva Television
and GMA 7-produced "Search..." doesn't let down on that regard.
'Reality T.V.' is the trend nowadays. We have to add
that element as an added attraction, to spice things up
a bit," says Regine. "And if you've been following the show,
you would really see that each of the finalists have different
things to go through. They all have a story to tell."
Regine is happy that there will be another promising talent
getting his or her big break after the Grand Finals that will be
held this Saturday, March 13 at the Ultra Football Stadium in
Pasig City. "I really want all of them to win. I feel so bad when
I see somebody lose. They all worked so hard. I make it a point
- to those who don't make it, and encourage them to never
stop believing. Kailangan huwag silang mawawalan ng
pag-asa."
